The Transglobal Car Expedition makes it to Resolute Bay

Keywords:

After completing an overland journey of 2,200 km from Yellowknife, the Transglobal Car Expedition has arrived in Resolute Bay.

Three 2021 Ford F-150 trucks and four Yemelya amphibious vehicles were used during the trek by sixteen participants from Ukraine, Canada, Iceland and Russia. Scientists and experts from Britain, Iceland, and Germany also provided support, as did Brandon Langan, a guide from Cambridge Bay who assisted with ice and polar bears.

GoodGear, a Swiss non-profit, sponsored the expedition.

Vasily Elagin, a mountaineer, explorer and team member from Russia, said, "This is a major accomplishment on a very difficult route."

Canadian driver Andrew Comrie-Picard, who took part in the expedition, said residents in northern communities have been friendly to him.

From Indigenous communities to residents of Yellowknife, Cambridge Bay, and Resolute, so many people have expressed interest and support for the project, he said. North Americans are exceptionally passionate and imaginative, and they seem intuitively to understand what drives our passion during this expedition.

Even though the expedition itself was successful, one vehicle was lost due to rapidly shifting ice as the vehicles were being returned to Cambridge Bay. The adventurers say that this will help inform safety measures for future travel related to climate change.

A complete circumnavigation of the globe between 2023 and 2024 is planned, serving as a test for Canada. In order to cross both poles, primarily vehicles will be used, no flights are planned. Over the North Atlantic, Greenland will be crossed by a ship, Denmark by a ship, Turkey by a ship, Egypt by a ship, South Africa by a ship, Antarctica by a ship, and Colombia by a ship.
